The Accord party chairmanship candidate for Ikosi-Isheri LCDA in Lagos, Prince Owolabi Taiwo, has revealed why he decided to contest the election against the wish of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Taiwo, a two-term councillor under the APC, defected to the Accord Party, shortly after the controversial primaries of the APC which saw incumbent engineer Fatai Oyesanya emerged party’s anointed candidate.
Speaking on his ambition in an exclusive interview with Adeyemi Olalemi, Taiwo said among all other contestants in the race for the LCDA’s top seat, he is the most experienced and credible.
According to him, “With due respect to my co-contestants, i’m the most experienced, having served the LCDA for six years as a two-term Councillor.
Taiwo recalled that in his first term as a Councillor representing Orile-Ikosi constituency, he was chairman, house committee on Education, health and environment and that during his second term, he was the Speaker of the LCDA house.
He noted that Education, health and environment are the three major sectors in any underdeveloped society, adding that “being the custodian of the Local government laws in the past administration, he has what it takes to run the LCDA effectively”.
Speaking on his key agenda for the people of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Taiwo listed his plans to include; upgrading of primary health care to give priority to the aged people in the community, Good road networking and economic improvement, Improving primary education, effective Youth empowerment, and Sports development.
He added that if elected, his administration would empower thousands of youths and give grants to 200 of the participants to start a business of their own.
Prince Taiwo, who is a grandson to the former Onikosi of Ikosi, Oba Adegboyega Taiwo, said he also plans to give due recognition and also carry along traditional institutions (Oba and Baales) in the community.
On why he left the APC for Accord party, Prince Taiwo said; “for every sincere resident of Lagos, to the best of my knowledge, APC never conducted any primaries. He noted that “that is why the primaries was followed with crisis and even deaths.
“I’m a law abiding citizen, i decided to fight both legally and democratically. If truly i want to serve, there are lot of parties in the country one can join if you know your personality is enough for people to vote for you.
Citing France new President Macron, who won with a zero candidacy party at the age of 37, Taiwo said he is confident that being a young and experienced public administrator, he would be victorious at the polls with a big margin.
He urged youths in the LCDA to wake up and join governance, adding that being a youth, he is the ‘Moses’ anointed to take the people of Ikosi-Isheri to the promise land.
Apparently referring to Oyesanya, the APC candidate, Taiwo said; “it is so sad to see a 65-year-old man contest for councillorship or chairmanship. The youths must stand up and join governance.
Taiwo also recalled that as a speaker in the last administration and a “upright man”, he impeached the incumbent chairman (Oyesanya) for gross misconduct.
He said his uprightness has attracted the love and support of the electorates in the LCDA.
