The Buhari Youth Organisation, BYO, Lagos State chapter has condemned the huge nomination fees being charged by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
BreezeReporters recalls that the APC National Working Committee had proposed N55m as the cost of the nomination and expression of interest forms for the office of President, while that of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party is N12million.Those aspiring for state houses of assembly seat are to part with N1.1m as against N600,000, being charged by the PDP. APC’s House of Representatives, aspirants are asked to pay N3.8m while PDP is asking its aspirants to pay N1.5m to contest the tickets.

For the Senate, APC aspirants will pay N8.5m as against the N3.5m under the PDP platform for the same position. Governorship aspirants of the ruling party are asked to pay N22.5m each to contest the ticket as against the N6m to be paid by their counterparts in the PDP.

The BYO in Lagos in a statement jointly signed by its Coordinator, Abdulwaheed Odunuga and General Secretary,
Adekunle Aderibigbe, described the nomination fees of the APC as “disenfranchisement weapon” being deployed by the party to disqualify youths aspiring for political offices.

While calling for prompt review of the high fees , the BYO said the the Youths deserves a platform to showcase their leadership prowess, arguing that it is their constitutional right to seek elective positions.

”’We are calling for a prompt review of the high fees for Nomination & Expression of interest forms in other not to slam the doors on competent candidates who would not be able to afford the fees by subjecting such candidates to the mercy of looters or corrupt persons who will make them stooges while dictating the affairs for such candidates.
”This policy will only disrupt the good reputation that the young Party and the President has built in the short stay at the helms of affairs. This reputation has drawn the attentions of various world leaders to the country and as such, it is better sustained by ensuring competent and not just moneybags are enabled to keep the progressives’ flags flying.
”Despite the fact that so many supporters and lovers of President Muhammadu Buhari are willing to donate to ensure he is returned as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria till 2023, it will be difficult to replicate this gesture for other candidates who may not be able to raise such funds by crowdfunding within the limited time.
”We are advocates of good governance and a government that belongs to everybody and nobody. We also believe APC is a listening progressive party that wants every Nigerian to have equal access and rights to opportunities. The prompt review for a fair fees will enable active participation of more members in the Party’s success in the 2019 general elections.
